It was a beautiful night for the second SWS of the 2025 summer season. Warm water, sunny skies, and smiles for miles.

Thank you to the surfers and their families, and a BIG thank you to the volunteers. See you all for the next one.

WATCH IN 1080

On June 16th, 2025 a nice little late Spring swell filled into the sand bottom beaches at the Wall on North Beach in Hampton, New Hampshire.
And Max Vincent Fatello got in one last surf session before he got married on June 20th, 2025. He and his now wife Jacquie (who's also a surfer)
exchanged their vows in front of their loving families and their best friends. It was a wonderful wedding ceremony and everyone had so much fun.
I even got to play a couple of songs (at Max and Jacquie's request). And one of the songs I played is the song used in this video. Little Wing.
I've always loved this song. Jimi Hendrix wrote it. And everyone else who covered it. Like Stevie Ray Vaughan.
We wish Max and Jacquie a Happy, Healthy, and Long Marriage. SURFING AND LOVE HEALS ALL WOUNDS!

The 16th year of SURFING WITH SMILES. SWS has been putting smiles on the faces of these young surfers and their families
at North Beach in Hampton, NH since 2009. This is the first of three events that SWS with Cinnamon Rainbows will put on this summer.
As always a BIG Thanks to Lindsey and Taylor and the all the Volunteers who come down to help out. Special Thanks to:
Dave Cropper, Kevin Grondin and Tony Berardini. As well as the Hampton Lifeguards.
Jersey Mike's with Crowley Gentile. But honestly THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS! You guys are the best.
We will see you on July 24th, 2025. And August 7th, 2025. Remember SURFING HEALS ALL WOUNDS!

NEXT BLOG July 20th, 2025.
All future Blogs will be posted on the 1st and 3rd week of every month (give or take a day or two). *Also in the event of any significant swell I will post the week of that swell. Although the blog is now bi-weekly, I'm certainly not gonna pass up a decent swell. So while it's basically going to be every other week, I left it open for some wiggle room.

HAPPY 4th OF JULY. TEXAS FLOOD. LB PASSES AT 61.
BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL PASSES WHILE BIG UGLY WAR IN UKRAINE
GRINDS ON. WAITING ON THE FIRST TROPICAL STORM OF 2025!

FOR THE LAST 5 YEARS OR SO, I HAVE TAKEN A PHOTO OF MIKEY MORAN SURFING ON THE 4th WITH A FLAG IN HIS HAND.
I'm stoked that our little tradition is still going strong.

LYNDON BYERS PASSED AWAY THIS WEEK. HE WAS 61.

(Below is a story from my new book. I wrote this in the mid 90's.)

Being a youth hockey coach I became friends with other dads who had similar lifestyles. Kevin Grondin and I spent many weekends at the ice cold Hockey Rinks. In fact, so did Cory and the other moms. Another parent coach was Tom Williams who lived the next street over from me. He loved hockey and the Bruins. He was a police officer on Cape Ann when he approached me to play in a Bruins Alumni game. At the time, I was good friends with ex-Boston Bruins player Ken Linseman who was skating on the Bruins Alumni team.

Kenny had given me a pair of his skates and a couple of his sticks with his number 13 on his sticks. I thought it would be funny if I didn’t tell Kenny I was skating on the other team that the Bruins were playing. I couldn’t wait to skate up to Kenny with his skates and his stick in my hand. Cory came to the game with our son Mackey. They were sitting in the stands when I was on the ice. Some of the Boston Bruins Alumni, besides Kenny, were Terry O’Reilly, Lyndon Byers, Johnny Buick, and a few others.

I was playing left wing, when suddenly Terry O’Reilly went skating by me stick handling like the pro that he is, when I somehow, miraculously, stole the puck from him. I stole the puck from Terry O’Reilly? Yup. There I was skating in on a breakaway! I couldn’t believe it, as I heard the announcer getting all excited as I was skating as fast as I could, heading for the goalie. It almost felt like I was in a dream.

Just when I was about 15 feet in front of the net Lyndon Byers came up from behind me and drilled me into the boards head first. Oh yes he did. He actually BOARDED me. Now, this was a fundraiser for the GPD. This was a NO CHECK game. There was absolutely NO need to hit me like that. I hit the boards so hard that it literally knocked me out cold.

For the second time in two years, I was knocked unconscious.

I remember hearing the air leave my head as I passed out. I also recall waking up and seeing Kenny Linseman bent over and saying “Ralph? What the hell…?”
Remember, he had no idea I was playing with the Gloucester Police Department. But there I was lying unconscious on the ice looking up at Kenny. Talk about my gag backfiring. I was so out of it, I couldn't formulate the words as I tried to explain to him why I was there.

The next thing I knew, I was sitting up against the boards with people all around me. The game had come to a full stop. Eventually, I carefully got up and skated over to the bench and sat down. Apparently, I was done. Every single Bruin skated over to our bench to check on me. Including Terry O’Reilly. Every Bruin except Lyndon Byers. What an asshole. The next thing I knew, there was an ambulance there. What? Yup it’s true. They called an ambulance. My poor wife and son had to witness all of this. Me being strapped to a gurney and off to the ER I went. All true.

Turns out I had a bad concussion and a bad sprained neck.

In hindsight, I could have broken my neck. In front of my wife and kid. LB was an idiot. Later when Tom Williams played the videotape of the game, you can actually hear the game announcer saying, “OH A HUGE HIT BY LB!!” Really? This is a charity fundraiser and this moron slams me into the boards? What the f**k?

By the way, BOARDING is a 5-minute major in the NHL and could also be a game misconduct. Read that again. Boarding is a 5 minute major penalty in the pros and could also be a game misconduct. Depending on the severity of the hit. I would have to think that me being knocked unconscious would result in a game misconduct.

Thankfully, Kenny called me later that night to check on me. I was more embarrassed than anything else. And I was also so very thankful that I wasn’t really hurt badly. As I said, I could have been hurt really bad or worse. Once again, I dodged another bullet. I must have a guardian angel watching over me. I used to fantasize about running into LB somewhere outside of the hockey arena and letting him know how I really felt about him and challenging him to a “one on one” gentleman’s dual. But he and I don’t hang around in the same places. I'm sober and he's not.

*Just as well. He died at 61. I'm 74 and still going.

I have no sympathy for him, but I do for his wife and son. Ironic isn't it? I mean my wife and son were present when he boarded me at a charity game and almost broke my neck or worse. I hope some of my friends are there greeting him in the afterworld and reminding him of what he did to me. Especially my friend Joe Somogyi. I hope Joe says hello to him.

I can still hear the announcer "OH A HUGE HIT BY LB!"

* The last paragraph section is new since his passing.

Ed O'Connell was one of the most loved surf photographers in New England. A US ARMY Vietnam Veteran who saved the lives of so many ARMY Grunts in Nam in 68-69 as a Medic on board those Dust Off Hueys. He was a close and dear friend of mine.

When he passed on July 1st, 2014 I swore I'd keep his memory and legacy alive by giving him this weekly corner. He loved surfing and he loved taking photos of all the surfers.

Not just those who could really stand out. He shot every one. As long as I shall live and breathe the salt air, there will be a corner dedicated to Ed.

This is a photo of an unknown regular foot at the Wall on May 1st, 2008. Look at that hollow section. I wonder why he didn't hit the brakes and duck under that baby, .

It's that time of year again my friends. If you're an artist or you know know someone who is a an artist please pass the word about my annual surf art Blog. Now keep in mind this is for surf art only. SURF ART. In other words anything at all to do with surfing. and that can mean anything for a surfboard leaning a against a tree or a wet suit hanging on a hook drying out. Anything at all to do with surfing.

99% of my own personal surf art is just empty waves. But that's me.

If you have any sketches or drawings of waves and surfing send them off to me. If you have any paintings (in all mediums) send them off to me. I do not want any photos or any "ai" creations. I want something that you did personally, not some ai robot created art. It needs to be real. You know, something that you created.

ON AGAIN OFF AGAIN LOVE AFFAIR. MUSKY & TRUMPY.
Call it the BIG BEAUTIFUL BREAK UP.

So THE BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL Passed through the Senate and the House. It was a tie vote until JD Vance came in to save the day for his bloated Orange boss. But not everyone was happy though. Most of the Dems were outraged and a few GOP members with balls spoke out against it. In fact, Elon Musk himself has once again gone against the Big Bloated Orange President and even threatened to start and fund a whole new political party. THE AMERICA Party. The Orange one is not too happy with his ex. Too bad. Back to this week's Meme.
The REAL"Fake News" the GITMO GAZZETTE was there for this historic signing. And once again Ole KSM had himself a front row seat to the Big Beautiful Bill Signing. No way Sheiky was gonna miss this big story. Though he was asked to leave when he asked Trump "When you gonna stop the BIG UGLY WAR in Ukraine?" Promises made-promises broken.

And so my friends, please take advantage of this weekly photo shop of the mastermind who planned 9-11 and resulted in the deaths of 3,000 innocent civilians by KSM (Khalid Sheik Mohammed). *Note to self -must pick up a case of broken promises at Home Depot this week.

SAM GEORGE CUTTING BACK AT LITTLE APPLE BAY IN TORTOLA.
This photo brings back such fond memories. January 1979 me and the late JT met Jeff Chamberlain and Sam George in the BVI and have remained close friends until today. At some point I am going to write a review of Sam's book CHILD OF STORMS. Same is one of the best writers of our Surf World. In fact, I'd call him the best. Or at the very least one of the best in the world. And the same goes for his longtime friend Jeff Chamberlain. Both of those guys are super talented writers. Buy Sam's book. It's an amazing read. I kept a daily Blog on my CATCH A WAVE FOR MOLLY surf campaign, when I surfed every single day for 365 consecutive days. Click on the Banner above to read entries of my daily journey. There's some really interesting and true experiences
that happened during that year. Some of which are to this day, unexplainable. Some are just mind blowing. But all true.

I started on July 26th, 2010 and ended on July 26th, 2011.

Some rainy Sunday, pour yourself a cup or two and go through this year long journal. Pay close attention to the month of May in 2011. Read that month and let me know what you think of that.

Be forewarned, it will change you forever.

Friday May 23rd and Saturday May 24th, 2025 New England was hit with a pretty powerful Nor'easter. So what's a surfer to do but to hit the surf.
And with me having an arsenal of music from my old band The NOR'EASTERS it was an easy call to use some of our old songs.
I used three: INTENSIFY, 95 ON 95, and JET STREAM. The songs fit the action and the overall vibe was pretty upbeat.
Though there were the usual bumps and groans out there. The blatant dropins, the ditching of boards, and the whiny ass
bitchy complaints. But nothing we hearty New Englanders couldn't handle.
We're tough enough to deal with whatever comes our way.

And with this weekend being Memorial Day Weekend it's only fitting that I dedicated this video to the over ONE POINT THREE MILLION
Americans who lost their lives in all of our Nation's wars. It's also important to remember that Memorial Day is not only for the fallen,
but also for the loved ones of the fallen who had to go on living without them.

HONOR, RESPECT, and REMEMBER.

Saturday May 10th, 2025. The full Mother's Day Moon gave way to a clean little swell that actually lasted into Mother's Day.
It's mostly Mikel Evans. The Evans family lost their matriarch last October when Karen passed away. It was ironic
that Mikey was out surfing on this swell. Knowing that this would be the first Mother's Day without his mom,
I focused on him. He has a great positive attitude about his mom and just life on general.

March 21st, 2025 the first day of Spring. But honestly? It felt way more like Winter than it did Spring. What's the old saying?
"March comes in like a lion but goes out like a lamb." Well, that maybe true in the upcoming last days of March, but on this first day
of Spring it sure didn't have the meek call of a lamb. Nope. If anything, it had the growl and howl of a lion. A roaring lion.

Anyway, I shot this whole video at The Wall. Literally sitting under the Wall. I can't remember the last time I did that.

The surfers that I know are: Ian Dreher, Mikel Evans, Dave Cropper, Max Fatello, and Richie Sambataro

The music is by my favorite new artist Stephen Wilson Jr. He is amazing.
Please visit his website and purchase some of his great original songs.
And be sure to check out his killer version of STAND BY ME.
It is by far the best version of that song I have ever heard. It will blow you away.

Friday March 7th, 2025, was perhaps one of the windiest and coldest days of the winter so far. It was all I could do to keep my balance on
those slippery kelp faced rocks while shooting in that wind. It was in a word; BRUTAL. While the waves themselves were not that
consistent, there were a few moments. I apologize for some of the shaky camera work, but honestly?
It was one of the most difficult tasks of my 60 plus years of shooting the surf.

Anyway, Johnny "JIM" Meehan got a few good ones, and you can't go wrong with James Marshall Hendrix.
HAPPY SAINT PATRICKS DAY TO ALL MY IRISH FRIENDS.

The last day of February. So it wasn't very big or very hollow. The night before was slightly bigger, but the conditions were not ideal for shooting.
This last day at least had sun and offshore winds. It also had a tad too many riders. There were 15 people in the line-up at first light.
That's too congested for that size. It was mostly waist to chest high. There were the occasional bigger waves but you had to be patient and wait for them.

Music is by Stephen J. Wilson Jr and I think he's one of the most prolific singer/songwriter/guitarists on the planet today.
There's nobody like him. Go to his website and check out his music and videos.

The day before Valentines Day. Thursday February 13th, 2025. Our first real overhead swell of 2025. It's been awhile since we saw waves of this size.
The whole film was shot here in New Hampshire. The songs WHY CAN'T YOU SAY LOVE b/w HIJACKER are by my old band The VINNY BAND.
I chose the music from our first single on EAT Records because I needed songs that had the word "Love" in the chorus. I wrote both of these songs
and sing lead on both. My brother Johnny plays lead guitar on both songs.
David Robinson of the The CARS produced both songs.
This recording was the first of many that David and I worked together on. David ended up producing our LP on EAT Records. Olas De Sexo

My friend Joe Carter made this video in 2010 during my CATCH A WAVE FOR MOLLY campaign. My late friend and fellow Marine Vietnam veteran George Masten
had stopped by to see me when Joe was here filming. George is also a Korean war vet. Joe's dad Manford Carter is a Marine Korean War veteran as well.
Joe told me after meeting George he reminded him of his father. I Love seeing George here. He was the best, and I miss him every single day.
He passed in 2016. Also in this video is my young puppy Patch. I mention that he has not made a single peep yet. Well, that all changed shortly after
this video was made. This is a true story about me skateboarding on the flight deck of an LPH off the coast of Vietnam during a Typhoon in 1970.
I got in a lot of trouble doing that. But, I'm a surfer, and that's all I'm going to say about that. Thank you Joe.

CAN YOU SAY RALPH?
My young three year old Patch trying to say my name.
Our little granddaughter Avery was there during this episode.
Rest In Peace Patchy. I'm really going to miss you.

Day One of 2025. I fell into three individual surfers on this day that I did not see coming. The first surfer was Mikel Evans. I had not seen Mikey
since the service for his mother Karen that we held on October 26th, 2024. Mikey wanted to surf The Wall and I told him, if he was going to
surf there, I would stay and shoot some stills and video. Now to be honest, Mikey was not the only one out there. He was joined by Mike Stanek
and a host of others. But I wanted to get some of his waves. I have been shooting Mikey since he was a pre-grom. So I hung around and
shot his waves. After the Wall I went north and saw my own son Max surf for the first time since his surgery a year ago. That was unexpected.
He has been slipping out here and there without telling me the last month or so because he's still nowhere near a 100%.
He's been riding a longer board for obvious reasons. But it was great seeing him out there as both a father and a surf photographer.

The third person I happened to luck into this first day of 2025 was Tim Brown. Tim is a quadriplegic athlete who has been getting in
and out of the water on a specially designed surfboard for the last 5 years that I know of. I have shot pics of him before and his dad sent
me a wonderful shell horn as a token of his appreciation. Watching Tim surf on New Years Day was a visual treat for me. Tim is actually
able to turn his board using his elbows and leaning into his turns. I have been working with wounded war veterans in the surf
since 2008 so I am no stranger to what the human being can do when they put their mind to it. Tim was riding waves on his own
and making subtle little carves on the perfect waves at The Rocks. In short he was stoked as any surfer I have ever known.

He had a good crew working with him and they were always within reach if he wiped out. I shot four of his waves
and he only ate it on one. But judging by the smile on his face, he was too stoked to give a shit about wiping out.
Hell, we all eat shit. Finally, I dedicated this first video of the year to the memory Karen Evans who passed away last October.
She is missed by all who knew and loved her. She was the best. Happy New Year my friends. Let's make it a good one.

Saturday December 21st, 2024. The Winter Solstice. The surf was a solid head high, the wind was offshore,
and it was really cold. The best news of the day was local surf mom Kim Grondin came home after a
lengthy stay in the hospital. Our prayers were answered as she came home for Christmas.
I guess we could also call this a "Christmas Miracle." Welcome home Kim!

The music is me doing my version of The Little Drummer Boy ala Jimi Hendrix.
On December 23rd is the 41 st anniversary of me meeting my future wife Cory.
I played this song at a night club in Boston on December 23rd, 1983.

Hurricane Kirk was the first legit Hurricane to hit New England. We got 4 solid days of surf. With October 8th, 2024,
being the best of the four. NOAA had predicted an active hurricane season for the entire East Coast, but it has
been anything but. Still, the Gulf has seen its share of death and destruction. And while no surfer that I know, wants
to see that happen, we do want these massive storms to simply go out to sea and produce good waves for all of us.
The hurricane season ends in November, so we still have time. A few more like KIRK would be a nice way to end the season.
Just don't kill anyone or destroy their homes and businesses.

The first SWS of the summer of 2024. And it was a memorable one. We had to deal with the first
ever threat of thunder and lightning. But thanks to the Hampton Lifeguards and the volunteers, the
first sign of thunder and lightning we had the beach cleared in record time.
In fact, we never even got a single drop of rain. But we will always err on the side of caution.
Always. Our main priority is the safety of the kids, volunteers, and family members.
Hey we got almost an hour's worth of fun before we pulled the plug.

The JANUARY SWELLS of 2024 from SURF FREE OR DIE on Vimeo.

This video has four distinct swells beginning with January 8th, 2024. That was the day after the snow storm.
Then we had those massive Sou'easters. The first one hit on January 10th, 2024. That one gave us two days of waves.
January 10th & 11th, 2024. Although there were ridable waves on January 14th ( the day after the second Sou'easter)
I did not shoot that day. It just didn't clean up enough for me to warrant shooting. But these three days
had some really fun surf. Then at the end of the month we got another really good swell on January 29th
and there were good waves on the 31st. And the local boys made the best of it. MVF got in his last surf
before his ACL surgery on February 1st, 2024. GODSPEED Mackey. You'll be back before you know it.

THE CHRISTMAS MIRACLE SWELL December 19th & 20th, 2023
from SURF FREE OR DIE on Vimeo.

Seriously? I did not see this coming, or rather, I did not see it the way others like SURFLINE saw it.
I mean the day before December 18th, 2023 in New Jersey was the BIGGEST surf ever recorded in Jersey.
Hell even Florida had some big surf. I mean it was going off down south. but even with that, I was not expecting the size we got.
That was a complete surprise. There's a few waves in this edit that might rival the biggest surf I've ever documented up here in NH.

There's one wave that Lars Hamilton gets that will rival any other wave ever shot up here.

But I'm not going to be the judge of that. You can form your own opinions. But the naked eye does not lie.
There's no Photoshop or AI bullshit in this edit. It's all real. Put it this way, it's as big as the Hurricane LEE footage
I shot in September, and it might be a little bigger. But again you tell me. This edit is dedicated to the TRUE Christmas Miracle of 2023.
Abby Jowett came home for Christmas. And that my friends is the best news of all. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
Music is by myself, Barrence Whitfield, Gary Hoey, and Mike Zito.

A DECEMBER SUNSET 12-11-23 from SURF FREE OR DIE on Vimeo.

The Another one session edit. I shot this on the afternoon of December 11th, 2023. I shot stills earlier in the day,
but it was overcast and the winds were howling pretty hard offshore, so I passed on shooting video.
But later in the day the sun popped out, and although the swell dropped, I had recently purchased a new video camera,
and was waiting for the right time, a decent swell, and the perfect light to shoot. Well, that all came together
on Monday afternoon, December 11th, 2023. Crowley, Ian, and Beckley were out, so I figured what the hell,
I may as well get some practice with the new camera. I mean I had the talent, the swell, and the lighting.
Anyway, it's short, only 6 minutes long. I think you can handle it. Oh yeah, watch in 1080. Hope you all have a
nice Holiday season. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanza, and Happy New Year.
But the one greeting the whole world needs today is this: PEACE ON EARTH.

THANKSGIVING 2023 from SURF FREE OR DIE on Vimeo.

The week of Thanksgiving was one for the ages. Sunday November 19th, 2023 was one of the best days of the year.
All the points were firing as were the beach breaks. And then on Thanksgiving morning, the day broke with a fresh
new swell. While it was nowhere as good as the 19th, it was certainly nothing to sneeze at. Again, all the points
and all the beaches were working. Like I said it was a Great week.
The music is by my nephew Jesse Joseph (qwillmusic.com) and as always it fits perfectly.
And once again this video features all local surfers surfing local waves.
I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I know that I am personally thankful for EVERYTHING.

AVA IDALIA from SURF FREE OR DIE on Vimeo.

About this particular video. I shot this footage at sunrise yesterday morning (September 5th, 2023). It was breathtakingly beautiful out there.
I had to leave early to attend a funeral for some dear friends of ours. At the funeral service, I heard this incredible tenor (Brian Landry)
sing this song "AVA MARIA," and thought, this would make a good soundtrack to this footage. I spoke with him after the funeral
and he told me he just recorded this song last week. And then he told me his dad was a Marine in Vietnam. Whoa. It was like it was meant to be.
The waves were from Hurricane Idalia and this song just seemed to fit. Maybe I'm wrong, but it just seemed to fit the mood of the day.

So I dedicate this video to Tom Grondin. Rest In Peace Tom. And say hello to Frank from all of us.

GIRLS ON CURLS from SURF FREE OR DIE on Vimeo.

Four High School students from Derryfield HS in Manchester, NH chose surfing as their senior project. They asked me to be their mentor,
and I accepted that challenge. The girls are Alyssa Shula, Elena Moore, Christine Nadeau, and Ava Young. In just 7 short one hour sessions
in cold New England waters, I along with the help of Erica Nardone, Kevin Grondin, and with the huge support from Dave Cropper and
Cinnamon Rainbows we turned these four inlanders into surfers. By the time we were done with them, they could all paddle out, sit on their boards,
spin around and catch the "right" wave and angle and parallel along the the face of the waves.
And the most important thing? They all had fun. And it seems like they all want to continue to surf going forward.
Just please don't drop in on me if I'm out surfing.

I want to thank CINNAMON RAINBOWS and Kevin Grondin and Erica Nardone for their help.

MAY DAY MAY DAY. Monday May 1st, 2023 Well we got hit with a double barrel low that produced enough rain to

last day of April was a bona fide soaker. And May 1st broke with some of the loudest waves I've ever
heard in the 60 years I've been surfing. I mean it was roaring loud. Maybe because of the South Winds? I'm not sure.
